The web safe colours are a palette of 216 colours proposed by Netscape back in the 1990's when many displays had difficulty displayed a large range of colours. The majority of PC's can now handle millions of colours, but the colour palette remains relevant for pages that will be displayed on more limited devices such as PDAs and smart phones which generally have limited graphics capability and processing power.
